After taking part in this years edition of the "Elandrun" I made a new "to-do-list". BTW ....great event.The track was very wet in the morning but as the rain stopped it dried up and it was  was  B I G  fun! :D

One of the things that piss me off is that I have to sit to close to the pedalls to have a good position at the steering wheel.But sitting so close to the pedalls is ideal at all on a circuit like Lelystad.They set out a realy great track with a nice mixture of fast and slow corners.That meens......work like an idiot to be fast.After my last round I decided to call it a day.My arms and legs where totally cramped.I never had that when I was racing my DAF 55 on the Nürburgring.In that car I made a new setup for the seats and adapted the steeringcolumm to it.So why not do it in the 360.Well..for starters.....the collumm in a 360 is completely different from the one in a DAF55. So.........let's look at it  and see what can be done.
I already had fitted a deep dish steering wheel but that 'wasn't enough.As the car is a 4 door saloon(so it was the smaller doors then a 3 door hatchback) I found out that putting an adaptor between the hub and the wheel caused a new problem.Due to the cage it's nearly impossible for me(I weigh 110 kg's :oops:  :oops:  :oops: )to get into the car.

Sollution.......detachable steeringwheel.....





Because of this hub(total length 6 cm's) the wheel doesn't come more towards you.....it also has a higher position...which I don't want.So the wheel has to come down.The columm  in my DAF 55 is fixed with 2 bolts to the frame behind the dash.So that is easy.Take the bolts out,get a spacer and 2 longer bolts and that is pretty much it.In a 3series it is a complete other thing.So I took out the collumm and cut off the top piece.....



...and welded in a tube..



looky look.....the difference between an original collumm and mine is 1,6 cm's



Refitted it looks like this.....



I took the car for a test drive and this realy feels much better.

I found that the hood was getting to hot due to the heat of the turbo.







I still had a bit of an issue with my coolingliquidreservoir. I have used one of a 850 for a while but that didn't really satisfy. But as Always...if you wait long enough the rwright sollutions comes by........

So I looked for a cluster of a Volvo 440.....and found it. :)



Transfering the tacho is realy a piece of cake. The only thing that takes abit of work is that you will have to use the plexiglass from a 300 serie's tacho( the one of the 400 serie's is too wide).The indicator plate can be cut in shape easily because its very thin instead od of the plate on the 300 serie's tacho.Than just dril a 2mm hole....

 

....to fit the needlestopper and ready you are. Takes about 1 hour......if your not planning anything else.... :P

I used a cluster that I got e few months ago.It was a complete one but the revcounter didn't work.After checking it I found the breach in the 12v+ to the revcounter and fixed it.An to make it match with the rest of the car......I did a little restyling.......

This roll-over cage was used in car nr 429 that competed in the Volvo360 cup.That car was taken apart last spring.

There is more to come..............don't worry.Long winterevenings are always good for some progress on things that have been stored on a side track like the discbrakes on the rearaxle and some other parts.

Well....its much more silent than before.With the sidepipe it was much louder.This sound nearly like a normal 360...with a little more lowtone.

Updates..................................................................................................

I changed all tubes ....steel-> alloy......





The oilcatchcan got a new position.
All vacuum,pressure and coolant hoses are replaced by silconehoses
overall.............................



I also but in a new radiator and an electric fan.

The sidepipe is gone......




Instead of that I got a 3inch Simmons mufler....



.....and a Powersprint endmuffler....also 3 inch.

I guess you could say I am happy with the way it runs now. Apart of some minor problems wich take a lot of time to fix,it runs ok. Considdering the fact that iit still runs on a slightly modified LE-jet ,I think it isn't going be much better.

I got another turbinehousing and wheel from a friend of mine. Planning on installiing that in a few weeks.

Because of the fact that the engine runs badly when its cold I disconected the coldstartinjector..........It seems to be a lot better now   ;D

So we took a ride into Germany,which is only a few km's from here.Just to see what the camshaft does at top speed..............

Last weekend I had a bit of time the play with the car and see how it runs with the new camshaft.


What can I say.......the best way to explane it is to imagine the car having 2 caracters.The first carater is that of of a friendly family sedan.Very smooth and easy to drive.Doesn't care about what the rest of the world thinks.The second caracter is best discribed as that from a sneaky sportsman.Loves the run quick and fast and sticks up a certain finger to everybody who doesn't recognize him for what he is.....

The car realy is much better now.Power comes in from about 1900 rpm.Power is more controlable than before.And because of the wider powerband it is a car that is much more suitable for everyday traffic.If you don't want or need the power it runs smooth and even better than the original B200.But.....if you want use its potential....its there.I tipped 200 km/h in fith gear ( I know ,highly illegal in Holland but who cares)and there was still no end to the power.Keeps pulling forward.The original "T"cam died in higher revs,the new one doesn't.

As a bonus,the car sounds much nicer now!

So yes....I am very satisfied.........The only problem is running when its cold.It needs a bit of time to start running smoothly.It sooms that its getting to much fuel when starting the engine whilst the engine is cold.See what happens if I disconnect the cold start valve tommorow.

I haven't found any reasons why I shouldnt be.A friend of mine had a the same camshaft in his 940 which hes has punished for over 10000 km without any trace on it.Valveclearance was was the same as when he installed it.

As I said,I've been searching for another camshaft.So why don't look for something that's more or less custom fit to the problem I had.And....as It must be custom made for a Redblock wherelse to look.......................than in Sweden!
 






Metall lashcaps instead of van rubber....








I've also put in a new set of platinum sparkplugs.These are 3 steps colder than the ones I had before.Als this features an electrode that is deeper inside of the plug.This should be a better prevention against detonation.





the first testrun this morning showed great inprovement.Power starts coming at proximally 1900 rpm and the engine keeps pulling up to 5500rpm.I haven't run it at a higher rpm in 4th gear yet but it shows no powerdrop till now....Hoping for better weather conditions so we can go and test it propperly

I know Frej.I found that out as I came to Sweden with my truck a few years ago.


What could be a good alternative to the 240 gauges.......the ones that are mounted in the cluster of a 760.That shouldn't be to hard to find in Sweden I guess.I had one but I sold it so I never came to try it out but it looked as if it would be much easier to build in the cluster of a 3-series and will look better than the 52 mm gauges.I've got mine working....but,to be honnest,I am not satisfied with the way it looks.When all other things are done I'll worry about that!

The holes are not big enough.You will have to grind them out.
The total job ,including the paintjob ,took me about 4 hours.Without the paintjob it should be possible to do in about 2 hours.

For starters...it doesn't fit.But I am getting used to that problem hahahaha.

You have to take away the "glass" witch is easy to do with a small screwdriver.You have to take it away because there is not enough space to put in the gauge.Than you take away the backside of the clockwork.I grinded out the holes for the instruments with a Dremel precision tool.A bit of a problem is the placing of the left instrument ,in my case the turbopressuregauge.On the back of the clockwork is a metal plate.You cant take it out as the stabiliser ,which is mounted on it ,needs this plate for cooling!!!!!!But you can take away some of it so that the back of the gauge wil fit in.There is no space for the normal brackets to hold the gauge in place but if you work precisly you can make the hole just big enough to put in the gauge and it wil stick in its place.A bit of liquid siliconsealing around the housing will work perfectly.
When your finished put back the glass front in its place.I glued it with some liquid sealing as well.

Come to think of it.....maybe I have some pictures of it.................already searching........

The car is used in every day traffic so it doesn't have to be very extreme. No need for speedway aspirations.I would build a totally different car for that purpose if I had only the budget for it!

If got an "A "cam so i might try that one.Strange thouhg that the cam that was made for the redblock Turboversions doesn't do what it should do.But thanx for that list....always good to have!

Jep I still run the T-cam.In fact now with the bigger injectors and afr I have some power  loss in the lower range.Before It was was running like a TDI engine.So power from the start.It came at about 1700 rpm and died at about 4700.

I've got an A-cam.......but I also have a K-cam(with the rest of the original R-sport kit).Some say it works on a turbo engine,some say it doesn't...........anyone here who has  build it in?

I took the 5 spokes of today.The tyres are almost like slicks and with the weatherconditions we have at the moment(15 cm of snow..I know ,you guys are used to a lot more) that's no good.I put on the snowtyres and they will be on the car for the next months.I am not sure what I will do.I still have those OZ rims that where on the car before the 5 spokes but I am kind of inlove with the 5 spoke rims.

About the grafics..Thanx for the compliments.It was a lot of work but I think it looks good.The part on the rear fenders will be made by a friend of mine.He has a plottermachine wich is great to cut out anything out of the foil.It will be in stile of the CS but will be something like "360 CS-T" or "364 CS-Turbo" .I'm still puzzeling on that................

I changed the oilpump yesterday which is a bitch under these weatherconditions,lying on the ground at minus 10 degrees!The engine lost oilpressure in low revs ,especially when it was on normal temperature.Coming home from from work last week it started to knock.......I knew that sound.Last time I heard that noise was in August...allpushrod bearings where gone then.So knowing what I learnt than,I orderred a set of new ones last friday and they where deliverred yesterday morning.Surprisingly this time it was only worn at the first cylinder,logically because that one is the furthest away from the oilpump.Ofcourse I changed the bearings on al 4 cylinders.As I took out the oilpump I found what probably caused the los of pressure.One of the seals on the small pipe between the pump and the engine was broken.As I had a practically new pump on stock I put that one in as well as a fresh set og seals on the pipe.As all the oil had to be drained, I also changed the oilfilter witch is a bit of work on my car.Because I have the original engine mounts There is no space for changing the oilfilter.The only way is to losen the alternator.....................I am still planning to change al that but it has no priority at this moment.But..........it was all very effective.Pressure isther as soon as the engine runs...before I had to wait a few seconds....which is killing as we all know!

You're going the 4-link route as well?

I was planning on buying a complete kit from a minitruck company in the US,
they're pretty cheap, but shipping from other countries in the EU is always cheaper when there is no toll fees.

No I am not...for the moment.I don't see the advantage.And its to much work.


I've done some cosmetic changes this weekend........














Should be clear where the inspiration came from.................................................

I am also keeping the DeDion bar.I am planning a steel adapterplate.which will be placed on the end of the bar(yes .....on both ends !)It shouldn't be to difficult to make.The is a company here in town which specialised in lasercutting.They have already made some pieces for me and they will make  the adapterplates as well.They always stock every design they ever cut out so its very easy to make a new set afterwards.

This is the inside of the BMW part



This is the inside of the 360 part



BMW has motronic with a 4 pin connector



Volvo has LE-Jet with a 5 pin connector



BUT ........


If you look closely you will see the resemblance of the shape of the parts..!




So my idea was to take out all the electronic parts of the BMW meter and put in the elctronics of the Volvo meter including the airtemperature sensor.So the housing,the swingdoor and the spring are BMWal the other parts come from the Volvo meter.You could call it a Hybridversion if you like.

As I am very busy during the week I took the 2 meters to some friends of mine.They are very good in car electronics and I told them what I wanted to do.At first they where not to keen on this but as I showed them them the parts they saw the possibilities.So they took them apart and builde a new one for me. As I came back the next weekend it was ready to be installed and it worked perfectly from the first second I put it in.The bigger airflow made room for bigger injectors so that's why I have the white ones in.

Next step will be a better camshaft as I am still running the engine whith the original "T"camshaft.

I didn't so far.I wanted to find out if it would be strong enough like this and for street use it was.The mounts are not under the trunk but under the backseats!The 3 rounds on the Nürburgring and especially "the carrousell" where to much.I am working on something new but there 's no hurry.As soon as they are finished I will show them here.Can't tell you what its gonna be.I've got severall solutions in mind and normally the best one comes out as I start making them.

The discs  needed only a little bit of work.I took them to the shop where they also made the adapters for me.They made the center of the discs 2mm wider so it would fit on the hubs like the original 360discs.They also driiled in the holes for the boltsI made a proto and exact drawing for the adapters.They made them in 1 piece out of airplane aluminium.The antisway bar on the rear allows you to drive on a much softer shockabsorber without losing the advantage of a verry stiff shockabsorber.It gives the car much less bodyroll without losing comfort.I use the car as my daily ride so I have to compromise between race and street.My DAF55 racer for example,is not suitable for streetuse at all.Its stiff as hell,very loud and has a setup for trackuse.My tripp to the Nürburgring was to much for the antiswaybar construction.I have to make some parts to attach the swaybar ends to the body..........so I won't get bored.

The reflex plate is indeed a (very)rare part.They where only made for MKI and MKII versions(with the smaller taillights). I actually found a second,brand new,one a few months ago.Together with the Hellagrille with the 2 big lights in it........

There are still some things to .I found a Airflowmeter of a BMW 535i.This is modified so that it works with LE-jet.They normally go with Motronic systems.Like I said..a rearaxle with discbreaks,also from the Sunny will be made probably this winter..Keep you posted

The frontbumper is modified to get more air to the intercooler and radiator.





It runs on LE-jet with a slightly modified ecu, 850T5 injectors and a piggyback to adjust the ignition.

I wanted to use the original engine mounts.To make that possible I had to relocate the turbo.







At first I wanted to use this intercooler(volvo 9 series) but it was to big.....The hood wouldnt close.




soooooo........I got this one.



used to be in a Renault Master2.8DTI.......

To make this fit....I had to modify the headlights

Last year novemberI bought this....



because of this......




I used the wintertime to rebuild the engine and to collect the parts that i would need
-T5 injectors
-watercooled cosworth-type garret turbo
-intercooler
.........and many many other parts.The list kept growing as the picture in my head became clearer and clearer

In fact ,all I used from the original engine is the cilinderblock waterpump,sandwichplate and exhaustmanifold.The rest came from my original engine!

I found this frontspoiler.Broken all arround but complete!It's a spoiler for a MKII but a like this one better than the MKIII version.

The brakes came from this car ,a Nissan SunnyGTI-R..jep..the 4 wheeldrive version



I modified this car Brakes to Big Brakes.The owner of the car didnt need the original discs and calipers.......I also have the brakes for the rear.........Rear axle with discbrakes is onder construction  ;D

I modified the frontaxle.I now have a wider track and more negetive camber









The car has a 4cm lowering on the back and 4,5 on the front

The swaybar on the front is replaced by a 25mm one(was 19). I mounted  a antiswaybar on the rearaxle.The idea came from my search for data about the 363CS.Only difference..I used a 22mm frontaxle bar of a gls-version.Cheaper and easier to find!
